Like other members of the nursing team, an LPN’s activities transcend a specific job description and are guided by a commitment to patient care and the high standards held within the profession. Typical responsibilities include bedside care, wound care, administering medications, monitoring patients reactions to medication and treatment, inserting catheters, assessing patients and implementing care plans, and educating patients and their families to promote health. In long-term care facilities and hospitals, LPNs may supervise nursing assistants and other unlicensed assistive personnel.

ECPI University – Virginia Beach

The College of Nursing Medical Careers Institute at ECPI University prepares practical nursing students to become an important part of a patient care team. Students learn how to participate in the delivery of care to patients and families, use critical thinking to provide safe and effective nursing, and communicate effectively with patients and members of the healthcare team. Instructors provide a solid foundation in the sciences and nursing in the classroom followed by hands-on activities in the laboratory and direct patient care in a clinical setting. The diploma program comprises of 1,682 hours covered over a period of 60 to 90 weeks. Graduates earn 48 semester credit hours. Course topics include anatomy and physiology, foundations of nursing, dosage calculations, pharmacology, medical surgical nursing, acute care nursing, nursing leadership, and normal life span. Tuition costs $35,865, and books and supplies cost an additional $1,559.

Virginia Beach School of Practical Nursing

The 18-month practical nursing program at the Virginia Beach School of Practical Nursing is open to high school seniors and adults. Students develop a solid foundation in nursing through interactive training in the classroom, state-of-the-art lab, and medical facilities. The curriculum gives students the option to apply for a CNA certificate after the first nine months and continue on to earn a Practical Nursing Diploma at the conclusion of the second nine months. Graduates are eligible to apply for the NCLEX-PN for state licensure. With small class sizes, VBSPN provides a personalized learning environment. Applicants must have good body mechanics, normal vision and hearing, demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to deliver safe and competent care. Clinical requirements include a current medical history and physical exam, satisfactory background check and physical exam, current immunizations (MMR, TB Test, Varicella, and Hepatitis B), and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers or AHA CRP card. A guidance counselor must submit the application for high school students. Tuition is $4000 for high school students and $6,000 for adult students. Pell Grants and flexible payment plans are available for persons with financial barriers.

Riverside School of Health Careers

Applicants to the practical nursing program at Riverside School of Health Careers must have a diploma from an accredited high school or a GED certificate, obtain a passing score on a preadmission test, be able to meet the basic program requirements, and submit two satisfactory professional or academic references and documentation of previous health care experience. Official TOEFL results are required from applicants who speak English as a second language. Due to competitive admission, Riverside College reserves the right to select the candidates who are best qualified for the program of study. There are two class schedules for the program. The day division runs for approximately 12 months and meet Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. The evening/weekend division runs for approximately 18 months, meeting Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm and every other weekend from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Tuition for the program is $15,000. Books and supplies cost an additional $563.

ECPI University – Newport News

Chesapeake Center for Science and Tech

The practical nursing program at the Center for Science of Technology is open to select adults in Chesapeake and surrounding areas. The Board approved program runs for 18 months and includes 1,500 hours of theory, lab, and clinical experience in licensed health care facilities. Course topics include anatomy and physiology, pediatric nursing, pharmacology, psychiatric nursing, nutrition, gerontology, obstetrical nursing, growth and development, medical surgical nursing, and nursing fundamentals. Applicants must submit a completed application form and $25 non-refundable application fee. A pre-admission test will be administered – schedules are available on the school’s website. High school transcripts, GED certification, references, a personal interview, and a writing sample are other requirements for enrollment. Tuition is $2,434 per academic year. Textbook, supplies, and uniforms cost an additional $500.
