A licensed practical nurse helps patients meet their daily physical and medical needs when they’re unable to do so for themselves. Their constantly evolving role changes in response to patients’ needs and the complexities of the health care system. Working under the supervision of a registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse administers medication, provides wound care and before and after surgical care, checks and records vital signs, provides emotional, mental, physical and emotional support, performs basic medical procedures, and supervises certified nursing assistants in some health care settings. In long-term care facilities, LPNs may have greater responsibilities and function as charge nurses where there is a limited RN workforce. More than 50 percent of LPNs in Georgia are employed in long-term care. Others work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, home health care, outpatient care centers, and government agencies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for LPNs are projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations. With an overall positive job prospect, it is a great time to enter the field of nursing. The median annual wage for a licensed practical nurse is $37,040 for new graduates.
