When patients suffer from an acute or chronic illness or need health counseling, it is vital that they get the medical attention they deserve. Licensed practical nurses are adept at providing direct patient care in a variety of settings, including long-term care, acute care, and home health care. A licensed practical nurse’s duties and responsibilities include assessing patients and devising a patient care plan, wound care, life support, performing procedures with the help of registered nurses and physicians, measuring vital signs, updating patient charts, maintaining medical equipment, ordering diagnostic tests, patient advocacy, administering medications, and providing counsel and support to patients’ families. LPN programs cover classroom and clinical experiences for students to develop proficiency in a wide variety of nursing skills. A critical part of the curriculum includes communication and collaboration with the health care team. LPNs work in clinics, long-term care facilities, physicians’ offices, hospital, home health care settings, and other medical facilities. Due to the current nursing shortage, LPNs are often in demand across the country. If you have a desire to care for patients, licensed practical nurses could be the right choice.
