Employment opportunities for Licensed Practical Nurses are projected to grow 16 percent between the years 2014 and 2024. The Practical Nursing certificate program includes core nursing and general education courses to prepares students for success on the licensure exam and also provides a foundation for future study in nursing or another career in health. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. Students will complete 27 credits of nursing courses and 16 credits of general education courses. Course topics include human biology, English I, introduction to nursing, introduction to psychology, medical surgical nursing, developmental psychology, principles of sociology, geriatric nursing, maternal nursing, and mental health nursing. In addition to classroom lectures, students will complete a clinical experience in the long-term care, in-patient, or out-patient facility under the guidance of a licensed nurse. Clinical hours are typically scheduled during the day between the hours of 6:30 am an 5:00 pm. Admission is selective and requires a high school diploma or GED, a minimum grade C in high school biology, one year of high school algebra, a completed physical exam, 2-step TB test, urine drug screen results, current health insurance, record of immunization, CPR certification, and criminal background clearance. All applications must be submitted by February 1st for fall admission. Tuition costs $5,891 for Pennsylvania residents.

Falcon Institute of Health and Science
Falcon Institute facilitates a practical nursing certificate program with the approval of the PA State Board of Nursing. The curriculum covers 1550 hours of instruction in the classroom and at a clinical site. Graduates will be eligible to take the NCLEX PN exam for licensure in Pennsylvania. Eastern Center for Arts and Technology
Eastern Center for Arts and Technology operates a Practical Nursing Program with the approval of the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. The program is accredited by the Middle States Commission of Secondary Schools. Through a blend of academics and practical instruction, students will be prepared to function as competent practical nurses. Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX PN licensing exam to provide quality care under the direction of a registered nurse or physician. They will be capable of providing patient-centered care, serving as a member of the interdisciplinary team, using research in practice, promoting quality improvement, keep up with changes in technology as it relates to practice, and counsel patients to promote health and wellness. The program’s duration is one year. Classes meet Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Students will also meet from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm in a clinical setting to provide care under the direction of a licensed nurse. A part-time program is also available at the Willow Grove campus. The duration is two years. Classes meet two evenings a week from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Part-time students will also attend classes every other weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Interested persons must pass a pre-entrance test then submit a completed application, official high school transcript or GED certificate, two letters of reference, and the non-refundable fee of $75. Upon confirmation of conditional acceptance, the student must attend an interview submit documentation of a criminal record check, child abuse clearance, and an FBI criminal history check. Final acceptance is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a physical exam and documentation of a current flu shot, immunization record, drug screen, and CPR certification. Tuition costs $13,000. A tuition non-refundable deposit of $1,875 is due upon acceptance.

Lehigh Carbon Community College
The Practical Nursing Certificate program at Lehigh Carbon Community College is designed to be completed in 12 months. The curriculum covers 51 credit hours and qualifies graduates for entry-level employment in a variety of health care settings. The program has full status approval from the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. Those who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the NCLEX PN for licensure as a practical nurse. Students will learn to integrate learned concepts in practice, recognize and attend to the diverse cultural and spiritual needs of patients, use critical thinking to deliver quality and cost-effective care, practice with the legal and ethical framework for practical nurses, and recognize the need for lifelong learning. Delaware County Technical School – Practical Nursing School
The one-year practical nursing program at Delaware County Technical School prepares students to pursue a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. The curriculum covers 1500 clock hours in the classroom and a clinical facility. The program conducts four levels of study each level progressing from the simple to the complex. Course topics include basic nursing skills, anatomy and physiology, medical surgical nursing, basic nutrition, mental health concepts, math for medication administration, psychiatric and cognitive impairment, and gerontological nursing. Classes meet Monday through Friday from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm. The program admits approximately 100 students in the February and September each year. Applicants must submit a completed application, submit a money order in the amount of $260 made out DCTS, submit to a criminal background check, obtain Child Abuse Clearance, provide documentation of high school completion or equivalent, two letters of recommendation, and CPR certification, and complete a 10-panel drug screen. A 2-step PPD test, attendance of a personal interview, and a flu shot are other requirements for admission. Tuition costs $14,977. Books and supplies cost an additional $3,250.
