As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you’ll have opportunities to work with other healthcare professionals in hospitals, residential care facilities, clinics, and outpatient care centers. You’ll work closely with patients, under the supervision of a registered nurse, to administer care and promote health. Your duties may include administering medications, wound care, personal care, and supervising certified nursing assistants. The aging US population, in need of constant care, provides broad opportunities for practical nursing graduates to secure immediate employment. Practical nursing programs include classroom theory and practical training in basic nursing concepts and the role and function of the LPN. Florida State requires practical nursing graduates to take the NLCEX-PN exam as a prerequisite to licensure.

The practical nursing diploma program includes theoretical and practical training in the fundamentals of human nutrition, foundations of nursing, gerontological nursing, pediatric nursing, medical surgical nursing, maternal newborn nursing, and mental health nursing. Sheridan Technical High School

Sheridan Technical High School’s Practical Nursing Program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The curriculum will include, but not limited to, theory and practical instruction in medical, obstetric, surgical, geriatric, and pediatric nursing, body structure and function, mental, health concepts, nutrition, interpersonal relationship skills, pharmacology and administration of medications, personal, family and community health concepts, legal aspects of practice, and CPR. Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN upon successful completion of the program. They may also transition into the registered nursing program at Broward College.

Ruby’s Academy for Health Occupations

Ruby’s Academy practical nursing program equips students with the knowledge and clinical skills to care for sick, disabled, or injured patients in a variety of health care settings. North Broward Technical Center

There are no prerequisite course requirements to enroll in the practical nursing program at North Broward Technical Center. The program is 1350 hours of classroom theory and practical training in a medical facility. The program requires 12 months to complete full-time or 18 months part-time. Class times vary based on the schedule and availability of clinical sites. Students receive expert preparation in practical nursing concepts. A state-of-the-art skills lab provides opportunities for students to develop their clinical skills using the technology and human simulators in preparation for work in the clinical setting. Through a partnership with the CareerSource of Palm Beach County, qualifying students may be eligible to receive training funds. Applicants must be a high school graduate or have a GED, take the admissions assessment (the fee is $70), submit two references and an essay, and obtain a physical exam report signed by a physician and including a current PPD and chest x-ray (if positive). All students must complete a criminal background check and drug screen to participate in the clinical rotation. Students with a criminal history must confirm clearance before admission to the program.

Jersey College of Nursing

Jersey College trains practical nursing students for a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Interested persons must have a high school diploma or GED. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam for state licensure. The practical nursing program at the Arthur Ashe Campus is a full-time day program that students complete in 12 months.
