Adults seeking admission to the program must have a high school diploma or GED, be 18 years or older, have proof of US citizenship or residency, provide two letters of recommendation, complete a Level II Background check, have appropriate submit proof of immunity for Hepatitis B, Varicella, Mumps, Rubella, and Measles, and provide a physical exam report as proof of acceptable health status. A negative TB, negative 10-panel drug screen, BLS certification, and health insurance card are also required for admission. Fort Myers Technical College
Students enrolled in the practical nursing program at Fort Myers Technical College will attendance classroom lectures, experience interactive simulated labs, and participate in a supervised clinical rotation to develop the skills needed to practice as a licensed nurse. They will learn how the body functions, pharmacology and the administration of medications, interpersonal relationships, human growth and development, nursing fundamentals, mental health, legal aspects of practice, transition into nursing, medical surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, geriatric nursing, and maternal child nursing. More than half the program hours will be conducted in a clinical setting. Example facilities include VA Hospital, Lee Memorial Health Systems, and long-term care facilities. The school offers two program schedules. The full time class meets Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm for 12 months. It covers advanced nursing skills, infection control, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, medical-surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, obstetric nursing, and geriatric nursing, and pharmacology and administration of medications. Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN for employment in nursing homes, mental health facilities, clinics, assisted living facilities, private homes, and physicians’ offices. Full time and part-time schedules are available. Full-time classes meet Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm for 11 months. There are two part-time schedules available: night classes and weekend classes that take 15 months to complete. Applicants must complete a nursing assistant program (120 hours) at a licensed program, be 18 years or older, have a high school diploma or GED, take the TEAS entrance exam, submit a completed application and fee ($100), submit a professional goal essay, complete a background screen, and provide two letters of reference. The practical nursing program at Cape Coral Technical College runs for 12 months from start to finish. Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN for licensure as a Practical Nurse. They also qualify for advanced credit in the Nursing Associate Degree program at Florida Southwestern College or other community colleges in Florida.
